Kea students learnt how engineers design and construct buildings to withstand earthquake damage by building their own model structures using toothpicks and marshmallows. They experimented to see how earthquake-proof their buildings are by testing them in an earthquake simulated in a pan of Jelly.

We had a great couple of days with both the juniors and seniors at Shanty Town this week. The children learnt a lot about the history of the Kokatahi and Kowhitirangi valleys from doing practical and hands-on activities. Thank you, Lisa and Judy (teachers at Shanty Town).

Great learning this morning with one of our very respected grandparents, Max Dowell. Max started as a child at Kokatahi School in 1939 (80 years ago and the start of World War 2). We were fascinated by his stories of the Kokatahi and Kowhitirangi valley and how the school looked back then. Thank you very much, Max, for your time with us this morning.

"Explain Everything" on iPads
All the children in the Pukeko room now have an iPad assigned to them individually. This is mainly to use the "Explain Everything" app with our junior students. It is being used to support the Learn, Create, Share approach in many of the Manaiakalani schools throughout New Zealand.
The children are working with our facilitator (Nicola Minehan) on learning and creating learning objects. They will soon be able to share their work with their parents at home.
